Play Circle: Topgolf Night with Dr. Tim Lewis & Sonia Fetherling

Friday, October 9, 5:00pm-8:00pm

Kick back, swing big (or just cheer loudly), and enjoy a high-energy evening of connection and fun at Topgolf Schaumburg, exclusively for CANIS+ Attendees.

This lively social event brings together great food, interactive gameplay, and the chance to spend relaxed, off-the-clock time with Dr. Tim Lewis and Sonia Fetherling in a setting designed for conversation, laughter, and genuine connection. We reserved the Chairman Suite and adjacent Topgolf bays to bring you CANIS networking at its most fun.

Dr. Tim Lewis and Sonia Fetherling are both widely respected for their work in canine behavior, training, and professional education, known not only for their expertise but also for their ability to connect, engage, and make complex ideas approachable.

This evening is not about lectures or formal learning—it’s about shared experiences, easy conversation, and building relationships with fellow professionals while enjoying fajitas, snacks, and cash bar in a relaxed social atmosphere. Whether you’re an experienced golfer or have never picked up a club, this CANIS+ event is all about enjoying the moment and making memories together.

Dr. Tim Lewis

Tim Lewis, PhD, approaches canine research through the lens of an evolutionary ecologist. He has lived his adult life in the woods surrounded by wildlife, and surrounded by dogs. Twenty-five years and seven dogs later, he continues his formal dog education under the tutelage of two Border Collies. Tim prefers herding and scent work with his dogs over most other activities besides walks. He hovers on the fringes of the dog agility and canine freestyle world without actually participating.

Tim’s formal, non-canine education began at Augustana College in Illinois, where he received his bachelor’s degree in biology, followed by a master’s and doctorate in wildlife ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tim taught for two decades at Wittenberg University in Ohio where he was an award-winning professor of biology; then another decade as a professor of biology at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. His classes included ecology, evolution, mammalian ecology, forest biology, tropical ecology, and general biology survey. He frequently uses dogs to illustrate biological ideas, including a class built around dog biology for university students and friends of dogs. His research ranges across many species, including wolves, deer, squirrels, turtles and, of course, dogs. He has presented findings of his research in journals, at conferences, and as an invited speaker for more than 30 years. He is also the author of The Biology of Dogs: from Gonads through Guts to Ganglia.

Sonia Fathering

Sonia began her professional training journey in 2000. She has shared her adult life with various breeds including a Coonhound, a Border Collie and a Tibetan Mastiff. She has enjoyed different activities with her dogs including competition agility, tracking, and Rally O. She has various training certifications including CPDT, CAP 1 and 2, LFDM-T and FFCP.

Sonia is the proud owner of Best of Behavior in the suburbs of Chicago, IL where a great majority of her work is helping dogs with a wide range of difficult behavioral challenges including aggression, reactivity, fear, trauma, anxiety and more. She has presented both locally and internationally. She believes in the power of connection, trust and play when working with dogs.

Currently Sonia shares her life with Kismet, Rainbow (both mixed breeds dogs), Ginger (a client's Malti-poo), Otter (a cat) and her two sons, Callum and Bowen.

Kismet started her on a ’severe resource guarding’ journey, where she developed helpful techniques and approaches to cases, where the modification techniques ordinarily used, were either dangerous to apply or had already failed. She has been successfully developing and using these with client dogs for over 8 years and is excited to share with others! She has presented both locally and internationally on this topic and has been on various podcasts discussing resource guarding.
